Live ops is becoming a playbook

Distinct from the retreat from live-service business models: the model narrowed while the craft professionalised. Convergent playbooks also mean these games increasingly differ by theme rather than by shape.

What is live ops?

Live ops, short for “live operations,” is the everyday work of running a game after it launches. That includes seasonal events, special offers, testing what players respond to, and keeping new content on a regular schedule. Studios increasingly treat it as a permanent team with a set way of working, not something they handle one update at a time.

Where it stands

Live operations — i.e., the events, offers, experiments and content cadence that keep a running game running — has hardened into a standing production function rather than a series of updates, and the practices are converging. Naavik's read of the top mobile puzzle titles finds Match-3, Merge and Blast games landing on the same event grammar: daily jackpots, hybrid competition-and-achievement weeklies, and endless album collections replacing finite two-month seasons. Their retention curves converge too, at roughly 25% D90-to-D1 and about 38 minutes a day.
